INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI & GUESTS

To request embassy letters for alumni and/or guests who reside outside of the U.S., please read the information below.

Note: Please do not make any travel arrangements or hotel reservations until your degree has been conferred or you have received academic confirmation that you are eligible to attend the commencement ceremony.

How to Invite Non-U.S. Citizens to Commencement

Please read the following instructions thoroughly.

  1. Apply for graduation. The graduation application can be accessed via the student portal.
  2. Once approved, request a graduation verification letter from the Registrar’s Office. The email for verification is [email protected].
  3. If you or your guests reside in a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), then you do not need to prepare a formal letter for your guests or follow the remaining steps provided that you have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) authorization and e-Passport. If you or your guests do not reside in a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program, or you have not obtained the necessary documents to participate in the VWP, then follow the remaining steps.
  4. Write a formal letter addressed to the U.S. consulate or embassy in the country where your guest(s) will apply for their visa(s). Refer to the following sample letter for guidance in writing your letter.
  5. Mail the originals or e-mail scanned copies of the two letters above to your guests. Many consular offices are accepting scanned invitation letters, although it is recommended that you also mail the originals to your guests.
  6. Advise your guests to prepare evidence of sufficient funding to cover their expenses during their visit in the U.S.
  7. Advise your guests to provide all the information above to their U.S. Embassy or consulate when applying for their visitor visas.

Checklist of items to submit:

  • Graduation verification letter
  • Formal letter to embassy or consulate (if applicable)
